On February 12, 2014 Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), ABSC Executive Director Mark Gleason, the US Department of State, NOAA Fisheries, the United States Coast Guard and several other witnesses testified before the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in support of the UN Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter, and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. This Agreement would require nations to effectively police their ports and keep illegal seafood from entering the global supply chain. In her testimony, Senator Murkowski specifically spoke about the severe economic impacts to the Alaskan crab industry and Alaskan coastal communities from pirate Russian crab.
